General FAQs

How do I maintain my filter?

  • We recommend cleaning your filter around every 20k–30k miles. You may need to clean it sooner if you’ve been through extremely dusty or dirty conditions.
  • Step 1: Tap the filter to remove any loose dirt. Choose the correct aFe POWER Cleaning Kit depending on if you have a dry or oiled filter. Let stand for 10–15 minutes.
  • Step 2: Rinse with tap water or a garden hose from the inside out. Do not use high pressure.
  • Step 3: Let the filter air dry out of direct sunlight. Do not apply heat. Wait until it is completely dry.
  • Step 4: If you have a dry filter, skip this step. Never oil a dry filter. If you have an oiled filter, Apply either Blue Oil or Gold Oil to the top or bottom of each pleat, about 1/2" away from the filter's edge. Within 20 minutes, the oil should spread to cover the entire media area. Touch up the spots that are still visibly white.
  • Step 5: You are ready to install your air filter into your stock or aFe POWER housing. Do not run an oiled filter without oil.

What's the purpose of the oil?

  • The oil improves filter efficiency by allowing more air to flow while capturing finer debris. aFe POWER oil is a high-grade blend and safe for your engine.

How do I maintain my filter?

  • We recommend cleaning your air filter around 20k–30k miles. You'll need to clean it sooner if you've been through extremely dusty or dirty environments.
  • Step 1: Tap the filter to remove any loose dirt. Apply the correct Cleaning Kit depending on if you have a dry or oiled filter. Let stand for 10–15 minutes and allow the cleaner to break down the oil.

How do I know which filter I have?

  • The color of your filter may be able to determine what filter you have, though because the dye in the oil fades over time, we recommend differing to the part number of your filter.
  • Your original order information and the instruction sheet that came with it will have the part number. If you do not have that information, try the alternative methods below.
  • If you have an aFe POWER filter installed in a stock or aFe POWER cold air intake air box, identification may require disassembly. On a conical filter, you can find the part number in a small button-like circle on the flange opening. On a rectangular filter, you can find the part number on its side. Enter the part number in the search box on our website.
  • If you have a complete aFe POWER cold air intake and know its part number, you can enter it on our website. After locating the correct product page for the intake, click on the instruction sheet or scroll down to find the corresponding filter.
  • You may also "Search by Vehicle" on our website. Enter your year, make, and model. Then, find the air filter or intake kit that matches the one you have.
  • For an in-depth guide, read the blog post, "How do I know what filter I have?"

How do I get a replacement filter?

  • To get a replacement filter or an additional filter with different media, you can search for it on our website by its part number. You may also call us at 951-493-7100 and press “1” for Customer Service.

Why does the filter fade from blue to gray?

  • The color comes from the dye in the oil and fades over time, especially if left out to direct sunlight.

What's a Pre-Filter, and how do I find the right one?

  • Pre-Filters are light, meshy sleeves that protect your air filter with minimal effect on airflow. They serve as the first line of defense against debris, twigs, and bugs and come in handy in extremely dirty or dusty environments. Pre-Filters extend cleaning intervals, and the dry-weave material is easily washable with soap and water.
  • Search for your filter's part number, then scroll down toward the bottom of its product page. There, you should see the Pre-Filter that fits.

Do you build custom filters?

  • Yes, we have a "Build-your-own-filter” service. Please click here to see if we can build you a custom filter.

Cold Air Intakes

What's the difference between open and closed intakes?

  • Some systems are open, and others are sealed. Open systems will make more noise and provide easier maintenance. Sealed systems will be quieter, protect the engine from excess debris, and offer more cold air.
  • We engineer each intake with elements to suit different vehicles and preferences. The horsepower and torque gains depend on multiple factors. Compare the intake kits by searching for your vehicle to see which will meet your needs.
  • We also offer "OE+ Kits" that retain more stock components than others (for example, the stock tube or the stock airbox.)

Do your intakes require a tune or modifications?

  • No, our intakes do not require a tune. They are designed to install directly to your stock system.

How long do couplers last?

  • Excessive heat and harsh cleaning chemicals can break down the material prematurely. The warranty period on couplers is two years.
  • Please call 951-493-7100 and press “1” for Customer Service for more information on replacing your coupler.

Do you build custom intakes?

  • No, we do not build custom intakes.

Exhaust

Should I choose aluminized or stainless steel?

  • It depends on where you are going to be driving and the conditions. If the exhaust is going to be exposed to road salt, snow, or salt water, you want to choose stainless steel. Aluminized steel is hot dip coated with aluminized silicon alloy to protect the surface; however, if scratched or dented, the material can become compromised and rust.

Is 409 or 304 Stainless Steel more rust-resistant?

  • No stainless steel is 100% rust-proof. All stainless steel will rust at various levels depending on its use and environment.
  • 409 stainless steel has the lowest chromium content of all stainless steels and may encounter localized (surface) rust, which can be removed. We use 409 stainless steel for a quality, cost-effective, and durable exhaust component.
  • We also use 304 stainless steel in many of our products. 304 contains more chromium and nickel for higher rust and corrosion resistance.
  • Click here to learn more about the difference in our exhaust materials.

How do I clean surface rust off my stainless steel exhaust?

  • Early detection is key. When surface rust is detected, allow the exhaust to cool first. You can use WD-40 and a Scotch-Brite pad or fine steel wool pad to remove the rust. You can also use a metal polish to clean the rust and help maintain the exhaust finish.

What's the longest-lasting material?

  • Aluminized steel is the most cost-efficient exhaust material and can last several years if exposed to a moderate climate and not damaged. Aluminized tubing rusts from the inside out and may not be detected until there is a problem. 304 stainless steel may last longer than 409 stainless steel. However, either will most likely outlast your vehicle.

Why are some offered only 304 or 409 or both?

  • Cost and aesthetics. Both are great exhaust materials but 409 offers the best value and durability while 304 offers the best corrosion resistance and long-lasting good looks. Our engineers determine the materials by application, market and demographic. We are always looking at ways to improve our products.

How do I learn more about your exhaust materials?

  • You can learn more by clicking here .

Electronics

What's a power module?

  • The aFe POWER line of power modules— Scorcher GT, Scorcher HD, and Scorcher Blue— all produce significant horsepower and torque gains. The Sprint Booster is a throttle enhancer, not a power module, and does not produce power.

Why did I get a "Check Engine" Light?

  • We test each one of our electronics extensively on the dyno and on the road before release to ensure that no CELs are associated with the product.
  • Verify that all connectors from the engine harness and the power module are plugged in all the way and in the correct orientation. Double-check that the male and female connectors from the power module are inserted in the correct respective ports. Most of the time, incorrect installation of the connectors is the cause of CELs.

Do your modules leave a trace on the ECU?

  • No, our power modules are plug-and-play and will not leave a trace.

How much power do they produce?

  • Power gains vary from vehicle to vehicle. Using our website, please enter your vehicle to find the corresponding modules. You will find the dyno-results and power gains on each product page.

What's the difference between a Scorcher GT, HD, and BLUE?

  • The GT and HD Scorchers are for gas and diesel vehicles with an in-cabin controller that can switch between modes. Scorcher BLUE uses Bluetooth to switch modes using a smartphone app.

What is a Sprint Booster?

  • Sprint Booster is a throttle enhancer that eliminates lag and quickens acceleration response. You may use Sprint Boosters with all aFe POWER products.

Can I use your power modules with other aftermarket parts?

  • We test all aFe products in-house to be compatible with each other. You can use our power modules with aFe intakes, throttle body spacers, exhaust components, suspension, etc.
  • However, we do not recommend that our power modules be used alongside other modules or programmers due to a lack of controlled testing. Doing so may cause damage to your vehicle.

C.A.R.B.

What is CARB?

  • The California Air Resources Board, also known as CARB or ARB, is the "Clean Air Agency" in the government of California.
  • Exempted parts are add-on or modified parts that have undergone an ARB engineering evaluation. If the part or modification is shown not to increase vehicle emissions is granted an exemption to emission control system anti-tampering laws. This exemption is called an Executive Order (EO) and allows the modification to be installed on specific emission-controlled vehicles. Every Executive Order part or modification has an assigned number that Smog Check stations, BAR Referee stations, or the ARB can verify.

How do I get a CARB sticker?

  • All items granted an Executive Order number from CARB will have an EO sticker in the kit and must be placed on or near the device. To see if your vehicle has been granted an Executive Order number, look up your vehicle's year, make, and model on the aFepower.com or ARB website. If, for some reason, you are missing the EO sticker or have any other questions, please submit a CARB Inquiry by clicking on the CARB contact block .
